Savannah Navy League Overview
What is the Navy League? One does not have to be a Navy vet; one does not have to have any military experience. The Navy League is a national citizens organization to serve and support the sea services of our country, the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. Flag Merchant Marine. The Savannah Council is one of 275 councils, representing more than 65,000 members. Navy League members are respected by leaders throughout government, industry and the military for their patriotic support and service to our men and women in uniform.
Getting down to basics, what do we do in Savannah? The Savannah Council meets once per month at the Hunter Army Air Field. It's a social hour, dinner meeting and usually an excellent military speaker. We sponsor the Sea Cadets in Savannah. We host a picnic for our adopted local sea service Coast Guard units. And we help with all the sea service ship visits made to Savannah by coordinating the visits with the ships and with the Mayor's office. Now this is more fun than work. We have about 6 to 8 ship visits per year and receptions are usually held aboard the visiting ships, a social event with our members and the ship's officers and crew.
For example, recently the USS Mitscher, a guided missile destroyer was here for St. Pat's week. The ship invited the Navy League for a reception aboard the ship. They set up a tent on the helo deck, set up a bar. The ship's galley prepared a great buffet meal. The mayor presented the ship with the keys to the city, 2 officials of the St. Pat's Parade Committee presented a St. Pat's flag and we presented the ship with our Council plaque. The ship reciprocated with plaques and a tour of the ship.
The annual dues for the Navy League are $65, $50 to the National organization and $15 for our local Council. The Nattional dues fund our legislative affairs work in support of the sea services and National awards to sea service members. Members also receive SeaPower magazine. Our local dues help fund the Sea Cadets and our awards to NROTCU SSU, three NJROTC Units and our adopted ships and units.
The Navy League is a worthwhile organization, interesting, informative and fun. I encourage you to join. For those interested, I have some brochures with application forms. My telephone number is listed on the form and if any questions, I would be pleased to answer them. If anyone is interested in attending a meeting as a guest just to check things out, I would be happy to take you to a meeting.
